Visual Literacy in every Library
What is visual literacy and why should everyone interacting with students in the library care? We know that young people learn more than half of what they know from visual information. Thus, we need to have explicit instruction in our schools to teach students how to think critically about images and how they influence messages and communication.
Do your students say:
"It's true -- I saw it on TV."
"Advertising doesn't make me buy anything!"
"I can find all the answers on the web."
"I found a new diet that I'm trying because it worked for [insert star's name]."
Help students identify when they are being manipulated, tricked, or misinformed. Find out what this looks like in both elementary and middle school settings. Find out the true value of picture books, which is to stimulate student learning across ALL year levels, not just early childhood. Don't worry, the Visual Literacy Test you will be subjected to is all in fun. Sample lessons will be included, as well as a resource list.
